PRACTICAL GUIDE · Marketing

Create clean marketing links you can measure

UTM parameters identify where visitors came from when analytics software reads your links. They are particularly useful when a campaign runs across Facebook, email, WhatsApp and other channels. Consistent naming matters because “Facebook”, “facebook” and “fb” may become three separate sources in reporting.

WHAT REALLY MATTERS

Before you start

UTM labels become useful when teams use consistent naming. Write a small naming convention before launching campaigns and keep sources, media and campaigns lowercase where appropriate. A clean campaign link should preserve the destination URL and any useful existing parameters.

How to use this tool

  1. Paste the destination website address and test that it opens normally.
  2. Enter source, medium and campaign values using a consistent naming convention.
  3. Copy the new link and use it in your campaign, then inspect your connected analytics platform.

A real-world example

A spring campaign might use utm_source=facebook, utm_medium=social and utm_campaign=spring_specials.

Good to know

UTM links label traffic; they do not measure visits by themselves. You need analytics configured on the destination site.

QUALITY CHECKLIST

Check this before you finish

  • Open the completed destination URL before publishing.
  • Keep a shared list of approved campaign/source names.
  • Check the receiving analytics system for tracked visits.
COMMON MISTAKE

What to avoid

UTMs describe where a visit came from; they do not collect traffic statistics on their own.

WHAT THIS TOOL ACTUALLY DOES

Copy an encoded URL suitable for ads, newsletters and social campaigns.

Frequently asked questions

Will a UTM link change my website content?

No. It adds query parameters to the destination URL. Some websites may use those parameters, but standard UTM tags are mainly for attribution.

Can I use UTMs in an email newsletter?

Yes. Source might be your newsletter and medium might be email, as long as the naming is consistent.
