Find your actual product profit after selling expenses
A selling price minus the supplier cost is not your final profit. Payment processing, marketplace commissions, packaging, shipping subsidies and tax treatment can reduce the amount left on each order. This planner calculates an illustrative per-item contribution after the expenses you enter, and then applies an expected sales quantity. It is especially useful for South African online shops comparing direct website sales with marketplace orders.
Before you start
Selling price minus supplier cost is only a partial picture. Include marketplace commissions, payment processor charges, returns, shipping subsidies, packaging and any sales tax treatment that applies.

How to use this tool
- Enter the product selling price, purchase cost, estimated units and fulfilment expenses.
- Include payment fees as a percentage and fixed charge, and add marketplace commission if applicable.
- Choose whether you are VAT registered and whether the entered product prices include VAT; inspect the cost breakdown before changing prices.
A real-world example
A product priced at R300 with R160 cost, R20 packaging/shipping and a 3% payment charge has less than R111 contribution before other overhead, depending on the VAT and fee assumptions.
The calculator treats fees and fulfilment expenses as entered business costs, not a tax-compliant VAT return. Input VAT recovery on individual expenses depends on your circumstances.
Check this before you finish
- Use landed costs for each sellable unit.
- Model returns and discounts, not just ideal sales.
- Compare contribution by product and by sales channel.
What to avoid
Do not count VAT collected as business profit if it must later be paid over.
WHAT THIS TOOL ACTUALLY DOESSee realistic per-unit contribution under your cost assumptions.
Frequently asked questions
Is this the same as accounting profit?
No. This is a product-level contribution estimate before overhead, returns, income tax and other unlisted expenses.
What if delivery is charged separately to customers?
Add the customer delivery charge to the income field and the actual delivery expense separately.
