Add and remove South African VAT correctly
VAT calculations cause confusion when a price is described as inclusive or exclusive. With an exclusive amount, tax is added to obtain the final price. With an inclusive amount, you must divide by one plus the VAT rate to recover the original amount; simply subtracting 15% gives the wrong result.
Before you start
Inclusive and exclusive prices describe different bases. For a standard-rated amount, VAT is calculated on the exclusive value. Removing VAT from an inclusive price requires dividing by one plus the tax rate, not merely subtracting fifteen percent from the displayed total.

How to use this tool
- Enter the price in South African rand.
- Choose Add VAT when the entered amount excludes tax, or Remove VAT when tax is already included.
- Review the original value, VAT component and resulting total separately.
A real-world example
At a 15% VAT rate, R100 excluding VAT becomes R115. R115 including VAT becomes R100 excluding VAT, with R15 VAT.
Not every supply is standard-rated. Zero-rated, exempt and non-vendor transactions need separate consideration. Confirm the current configured rate before relying on an estimate.
Check this before you finish
- Confirm the supply is actually subject to standard-rated VAT.
- Check whether supplier prices were quoted inclusive or exclusive.
- Match rounding to your invoice and accounting rules.
What to avoid
Do not use a VAT calculator as evidence that a business is VAT-registered or entitled to deduct input tax.
WHAT THIS TOOL ACTUALLY DOESSee a transparent calculation breakdown using the configured rate; it does not file VAT returns.
Frequently asked questions
Why is removing VAT not the same as taking off 15%?
Because the 15% tax is calculated on the VAT-exclusive base, not on the final inclusive amount.
Can a business charge VAT if it is not registered?
VAT registration and applicable rules matter. This calculator does not determine whether a supplier may charge VAT.
