PRACTICAL GUIDE · Operations

Calculate courier volumetric weight and protect delivery margin

Shipping costs are often based on the larger of actual parcel weight and volumetric weight. A light but oversized box can therefore cost more than expected. Couriers use different volumetric divisors, minimum charges, delivery zones and surcharges, so a calculator should make these assumptions editable. This tool estimates chargeable kilograms, carrier charge and your true delivery cost after packaging and fulfilment overhead. It then compares that amount with what you charge your customer. The result is a planning estimate, not a live carrier quote.

WHAT REALLY MATTERS

Before you start

Couriers may charge according to the larger of actual weight and volumetric weight. Add packaging, handling, insurance and return risk to understand the real fulfilment cost. Different services use different divisors and tariffs.

How to use this tool

  1. Enter parcel length, width and height in centimetres along with actual weight in kilograms.
  2. Choose the divisor from your carrier tariff, then enter the price per chargeable kilogram, base fee and extra handling costs.
  3. Compare your estimated cost with the delivery fee charged to the customer and export a cost breakdown.

A real-world example

A 40 × 30 × 20 cm parcel is 24,000 cm³. At a divisor of 5,000, volumetric weight is 4.8 kg. If it weighs only 2 kg, the courier may rate it at 4.8 kg, subject to the carrier tariff.

Good to know

Confirm whether the courier rounds chargeable weight up to the next half-kilogram or kilogram, and allow for remote-area and fuel surcharges.

QUALITY CHECKLIST

Check this before you finish

  • Confirm package dimensions in centimetres and actual mass.
  • Use the divisor and rate supplied by the chosen courier.
  • Model failed deliveries, packaging and collection fees.
COMMON MISTAKE

What to avoid

A cost estimate is not a live courier quote or confirmed service availability.

WHAT THIS TOOL ACTUALLY DOES

Calculate indicative chargeable weight and delivery cost using your inputs.

Frequently asked questions

Does it fetch The Courier Guy or other live prices?

No. Enter tariff assumptions from your own carrier quotation. Provider APIs are not connected.

Is the largest weight always charged?

Often, but not universally. The service agreement determines volumetric rules, minimums and rounding.
